Special to the Courier

Using a pair of strong pitching performances, the Cowley College baseball team opened play in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with a doubleheader sweep over Labette Community College Sunday in Arkansas City. The Tigers will wrap up the four-game series by hosting Labette Monday at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, Cowley got strong starts on the mound from freshmen Mark Meadors and Levi Skinner as they won by scores of 4-1 and 1-0. Tiger pitchers combined to allow only seven hits in the doubleheader.

?We played pretty good defense and pitched pretty good,? Cowley assistant coach Darren Burroughs said. ?It?s always good to get two wins.?

In game one, Cowley got a run scoring single from Dylan Delso in a two-run third inning and led 2-1 after five innings of play. Three walks and a pair of singles helped the Tigers score a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Meadors allowed just three hits and one run in five innings pitched as he evened his record at 1-1 on the season. The right-hander struck out three and walked one. Freshman Seth Holman pitched two scoreless innings of relief and struck out three.

Delso, Matt Anderson and Tyler Rolland each went 2-for-3 as they combined for all six of Cowley?s hits in the game.

Drew Arnold took the loss for Labette and allowed four hits and two runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

In game two, the team?s were locked in a scoreless pitchers duel before Tyler Munger singled home Rolland with the game?s winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Skinner allowed only one hit in five innings pitched, while striking out five and walking just one. Sophomore Ty Rowe (1-0) picked up the win by tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Rowe struck out four and walked one.

Munger went 2-for-2 with a RBI as Cowley out-hit Labette 7-2. The Cardinals? Cody Fredrickson was saddled with the loss despite going 6 1/3 solid innings on the mound.

Cowley is now 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk East, while Labette drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
