T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note coming on August 8 for $249.99

The day that many T-Mobile users have been waiting for is almost here. After telling the world that they were going to offer the Galaxy Note, T-Mobile has finally announced when it will be available.

The T-Mobile Galaxy Note will be available for consumers to purchase on Wednesday, August 8 2012. The phone will sell for $249.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate and will require your usual 2-year contract to get the phone at the subsidized pricing. If you prefer one of T-Mobile?s Value Plans, the phone will set you back $199 and you have to pay $20 per month until your handset is paid off.

Specs-wise, the Galaxy Note is the same as the phone we?ve seen in the past. It features a fast 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a massive 5.3-inch display, 16GB of internal storage, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and more.

If you?re not sure if you should be buying the Galaxy Note now, you should probably wait a few more days to see what Samsung has planned for its August 15 event. On the 15th, they plan on announcing some new devices. A lot of people are saying that the Galaxy Note 2 will be announced while others are putting their money on the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet.

Either way, we?ll find out real soon. So, there you have it, folks. August 8. T-Mobile. Galaxy Note. $249.99!

Hollande vows to fight California's ban on foie gras

France will fight for the right to continue exporting foie gras, the delicacy produced by the force-feeding of geese and ducks, President Fran?ois Hollande has pledged.

A law against foie gras sales took effect in California this month ? the first ban of its kind in the world. France fears that similar legislation may spring up in other US states.

Only a small part of annual French production is exported, but President Hollande nonetheless found time in his schedule to visit a farm which makes foie gras at Monlezun, in Gers, south- west France, at the weekend.

"Foie gras is a great French product which honours the farmers who devote their lives to it," he said. "I will not allow any challenge to foie gras exports, from certain countries or from certain American states."

It is unclear what France can do about the Californian ban, which was passed into law following a campaign by animal rights activists, supported by Hollywood celebrities and pop stars, including Sir Paul McCartney. France fears, however, that the implementation of the Californian law could encourage copycat legislation in other US states ? and maybe even within the European Union.

While admitting that he could not fight the US law directly, Mr Hollande said he would argue for France's right under free trade treaties to export a "good product" which respects "health norms" and "animal comfort". In the meantime, he said, he would bombard US political leaders with gifts of foie gras "for their own great enjoyment".

"We may sometimes not be able to afford to buy foie gras ourselves but I wouldn't want the Americans to be deprived of it," he joked.

France produces 80 per cent of the world's foie gras ? 19,500 tonnes a year ? which is created by force-feeding geese and ducks until their livers swell to 10 times their normal size. Almost all of the French foie gras is consumed in France. Just over 2 per cent is exported.

It is useful for Mr Hollande politically to cast himself as a defender of rural and ancient traditions. In truth, 80 per cent of French foie gras is produced in factory farms, rather than small family-run businesses like the one he visited on Saturday.

Some progress has been made towards animal welfare in recent years. The birds no longer have their feet nailed to the floor. They have more room in their cages and are force-fed for two weeks instead of three.

Popularity and Friendship at High School | Psychology Today

Consider the scene: Tom, a small, shy, openly gay high school student, sat at the back of the school bus on his own. He saw three of the most popular, athletic boys get on the bus, fresh from soccer practice. As they made their way down the aisle, they saw Tom alone and moved toward him.

What happened next?

?

Not what you?d expect. The boys, in fact, sat down to talk with Tom. ?I didn?t really know him well,? one later told me. ?I knew he was the gay kid at school, that?s all. ? He was all on his own. I mean, I couldn?t just let him sit there alone. Nobody should have to sit alone.?

Having documented in earlier posts that masculinity is changing among British male youth, I now examine how popularity is constructed in one of the high schools where I collected data?Standard High. This is because it was markedly different from what one might expect. Even though some boys were more popular than others, this popularity was not maintained through the harassment of peers or through risk-taking behaviors.

The ?jock? was not king at Standard High. Boys ascribing to a wide range of masculine archetypes (including geek and emo) could be popular. These boys came from both privileged backgrounds and areas of socio-economic disadvantage; they included students of various ethnicities and boys of various athletic abilities. When I analyzed what made a boy popular, I found that it was dependent on the extent to which he maintained other characteristics. I identified four main categories of behavior that increased one?s popularity at Standard High: charisma, authenticity, emotional support, and social fluidity.

1. Charisma

Just like with more traditional forms of masculinity, a boy?s popularity at Standard High is primarily maintained by entertaining his peers through high-octane behaviors. It is these ?fun-loving? acts of extroversion that really catapult a boy to popularity. For example, one week in the common room entertainment was provided by boys using a skateboard. They performed tricks, trying to outperform their friends. The success of the trick, however, was less important than the exuberance with which it was performed. The most popular performances were the funniest and the most physical, and boys who could do this best received the most praise.

This idea of charisma raising popularity was also supported by interviews with students. For example, Alex, a quiet student who plays in a rock band, commented, ?The bigger the character you are, the higher up you are.? But contrary to the charisma of aggressive and macho boys, students argued that charisma raised the spirits of all students. As Ian said, ?Say it?s a wet and rainy day and everyone?s down, you can always rely on someone doing something, just to make everyone laugh again, and feel a bit better.?

2. Authenticity

It used to be the case that those boys who did not engage in extroverted behaviors were socially marginalized as nerdy or gay. However, at Standard High more introverted students can be popular if their behaviors are deemed to be part of ?who you really are.? One of the popular students, Ian, said, ?Take Sam, he?s a bit different. But I got to know him, and he?s really cool. I like his individuality.? As Jack said, ?It?s ultimately about comfortability with yourself.? This was demonstrated through the clothes that the boys wore. That is, a wide variety of clothing styles were on display at Standard High, and while clothing was important, what mattered was not the style of clothes you wore, but that it ?fit? with your personality.

3. Emotional support

One of the most heartening and perhaps surprising aspects of what constitutes popularity at Standard High was that the giving of emotional support was an ordinary and valued way of life for boys at this school. Indeed, boys spoke of their close friendship openly; as Matt said, ?I love my friends, and I could rely on them if I needed to.?

I frequently observed this kind of support between male friends. However, boys also provided reassurance during public events as well. One example of this came during the election of ?student officers.? Here, students had to give a speech as to why they should be elected to one of the various available positions. Each candidate had to give a three-minute speech in assembly, and each was applauded before and after they did so. However, Simon was rather awkward during his speech, and spoke rather hesitantly. Despite not being particularly popular, he was equally applauded by his peers. Furthermore, later walking past a group of the most popular students, Matt called out, ?Well done, Simon,? and Ian added, ?Yeah, it?s not easy to do.? There was no heckling, and the boys praised Simon?s willingness to take part.

4. Social Fluidity

The final element of popularity at Standard High complements both inclusivity and support. Here, social fluidity recognizes how boys befriend a broad range of peers. Contrary to what earlier research has shown, boys are not part of antagonistic cliques and value the ability to move between social groups at Standard High. Indeed, there are no real cliques at Standard High?just groups of friends. Alex described this well by saying, ?When you enter the common room and your friends aren?t there, you can just talk to other people.?

The boys value this sociability, and this was most powerfully demonstrated by how they decided to celebrate the end of the school year. In the last week of the summer term, approximately two-thirds of the students organized a five-day holiday together to the same seaside resort. One of the key components of this trip was that everyone stayed together. As Matt said, ?It?s important we go as a group, so we can all celebrate the end of the year together.? At Standard High, popularity is achieved by including peers, not excluding them.

Conclusion

One of the key findings from my research on young men is that they are rapidly rejecting bullying and marginalization as ways of feeling good about themselves. Popularity is determined by how extrovert, authentic, and inclusive a boy is, not by how many other kids he can beat up. This isn?t to say that bullying has been eradicated, or that no boys will be or feel excluded, but it is to document a key change in the social dynamics of boys in this school.

Furthermore, I found a similar atmosphere at two other schools: one school with a religious ethos and one for working-class youth who had troubled educational experiences. Now, of course, it is quite possible that these behaviors are less prevalent in the U.S., where attitudes toward homosexuality are less inclusive. But homophobia is decreasing in America, and it is likely that it will influence boys? behaviors in similar ways. Fundamentally, it is vital to recognize that there are many different ways of doing masculinity, and that some of these are gentle, open and inclusive.

Saturn moon's monster landslides

Saturn's moon Iapetus frequently plays host to a huge type of landslide or avalanche that is rare elsewhere in the Solar System, scientists report.

Sturzstroms or "long-runout landslides" move faster and farther than geological models predict they should.

They have been seen on Earth and Mars, but there is debate about their causes.

Now, images from the Cassini space mission, reported in Nature Geoscience, suggest that heating of icy surfaces helps the landslides keep going.

On Earth, landslides typically travel a horizontal distance that is less than twice the distance that the material has fallen.

Long-runout landslides, by contrast, can travel as much as 30 times the vertical falling distance.

A great many mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, ranging from simple sliding on ice to the sound waves from the slide making rock and debris behave more like a fluid.

But there is little consensus on which of these theories, if any, is correct.

Now, Kelsi Singer of Washington University in St Louis, US, and colleagues report that the geography of Iapetus is a unique setting to test these theories.

Iapetus

 • Fatter at equator than at its poles; encircled by huge equatorial ridge
 • The ridge - a chain of mountains wrapped around Iapetus - reaches up to 20km high
 • One side of Iapetus is covered in dark material, while the other side is much brighter
 • As a result, it has been described as the "yin and yang" of Saturn's moons
 • Discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1671; Cassini also notices dark-light difference

"The landslides on Iapetus are a planet-scale experiment that we cannot do in a laboratory or observe on Earth," Ms Singer said.

"They give us examples of giant landslides in ice, instead of rock, with a different gravity, and no atmosphere. So any theory of long-runout landslides on Earth must also work for avalanches on Iapetus."

Iapetus is a geologically interesting place to look; it is a squashed sphere, fatter at its equator than its poles, and is mostly encircled by a ridge that reaches peaks some 20km high.

It also has a number of giant impact craters reaching depths of 25km.

The icy satellite has more giant landslides than any Solar System body other than Mars. The reason, says Prof William McKinnon, also from Washington University, is Iapetus' spectacular topography.

"Not only is the moon out-of-round, but the giant impact basins are very deep, and there's this great mountain ridge that's 20km (12 miles) high, far higher than Mount Everest," he explained.

"So there's a lot of topography and it's just sitting around, and then, from time to time, it gives way."

Ms Singer was looking for stress fractures in the moon's ice, but instead found evidence of 30 massive landslides - 17 along crater walls and 13 along the giant equatorial ridge.

Analysis of the images from these events suggests that the "coefficient of friction" - a measure of how much the slip-sliding of material in a landslide tends to slow it down - on Iapetus is far lower than expected for ice.

It appears that this faster-moving ice seen on Iapetus has a lower friction coefficient than that of slow-moving ice measured in Earth-bound laboratories.

The team suggests that the tiny contact points between bits of ice debris in such a landslide may heat up considerably, melting it and forming a more fluid - and thus less friction-limited - mass of material.

They suggest that physicists here on Earth test the idea in the laboratory, giving insight not only into what is happening on Iapetus, but closer to home as well.

Another Writer's Journey ? Ed Griffin ? Danielle deValera

?My guest blogger this month is Ed Griffin, who teaches creative writing at Matsqui Prison, a medium-security prison in Canada. Ed has just released his new eboook ? a novel entitled Prisoners of the Williwaw ? on Amazon. Over to you, Ed.

?

In the 1980s, my wife and I owned a mom and pop commercial greenhouse. Our business was prospering, but something was wrong. My life was planting seeds, growing tiny plants and selling vegetables and garden plants in the spring. I was becoming what I grew ? a cabbage, or maybe a petunia. My mind was dying and I knew it.

????????? I started playing around with writing. After supper every night I would go out to my ?office,? a little added-on room between our house and the garage. It had windows to the front and back and a space heater that was adequate for spring and fall, but not winter. I would sit down at the typewriter and follow my creative muse.

????????? Whole worlds opened to me. I wrote about the area behind my childhood garage where I practiced pitching, and dreamed of reaching the major leagues. I wrote a short story about a group of prisoners on an island. I wrote a poem about getting along with the Russians. Hours passed. Suddenly, as I wrote, an alarm would sometimes ring in the house. The alarm meant I hadn?t turned the heat on in the greenhouses. I had to shut the door on the vibrant world that grew on the paper in front of me and hurry to the greenhouses to start the furnaces.

????????? An hour later I?d be back at the typewriter. Type a sentence, stop, look at it, realize it wasn?t quite true and then search deeper. Layers of middle-aged half-truths disappeared, the comfortable maxims I had surrounded myself with ? ?Business is good. Don?t make any changes,? and ?Relax. You?re getting older.? The fires of my youth burned again ? civil rights, world peace, a place in the sun for every person. The idealism that had lain dormant for eight years sparked back into life.

????????? Isaiah was on the scene again, reminding me of the words I read in the seminary and tried to live when I was a priest:

????????? I have appointed you to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison and those who live in darkness from the dungeon. [Chapter 42-6]

????????? As I wrote I dug, I searched always deeper, trying to reach the truth. It might be easy to speak a lie, but it wasn?t easy to write one. I started to unravel the tangled skein that was me. These revelations came, not from writing philosophy or self-help dictums, but from writing fiction. Put a man and a woman in a fictional situation. What does the woman really think? What does the man think? Is this real? Is this how people are? Where do I get my ideas? What is human nature all about? Who am I?

????????? For example, as I wrote about the prisoners on the island, I got to know each one of them. How did they get into crime? Why were they different than me? Did they have a religious education as I did? What did they think about God? Was God a mean father for them or a gentle parent? What did I think about God?

???????? Amazing. The seminary had tried for twelve years to teach me how to meditate, and here I was doing it while I wrote.

The Martians have set up their very own embassy in inner city of ...

The new embassy was designed by LAVA, with partners Will O?Rourke and The Glue Society, as a fusion of a whale, a rocket and a time tunnel, an immersive space of oscillating plywood ribs brought to life by red planet light and sound projections.

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

LAVA?s design for the Martian Embassy is for The Sydney Story Factory, a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in Redfern, Sydney. The project was a collaboration with production company Will O?Rourke and their creative partners The Glue Society, who developed the Martian concept which was then road tested with kids ? of all ages.

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

Chris Bosse, Asia Pacific director of LAVA said: ?It?s the stuff great stories are made of ? think of Moby Dick, H. G. Wells? Time Machine and 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick?.

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

?The concept is to awaken creativity in kids, so the design acts as a trigger, firing up the engines of imagination. It?s an intergalactic journey ? from the embassy, at the street entrance, to the shop full of red planet traveller essentials, to the classroom. By the time kids reach the writing classes they have forgotten they are in ?school?.?

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

?Using a fluid geometry merging the three program components [embassy, school and shop], a computer model was sliced and ?nested? into buildable components. 1068 pieces of CNC-cut plywood were put together like a giant puzzle. Using technologies from the yacht and space industry the timber ribs create shelves, seats, benches, storage, counters and displays and continue as strips on the floor. Edged with Martian green, the curvy plywood flows seamlessly so that walls, ceiling and floor, space, structure and ornament, become one element.?

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

A mix of Martian essential oils infuses the tunnel to inspire young imaginations, whilst the sounds and lights of the red planet animate the space. Martian passports, alien money, 1kg cans of gravity, abduction kits and SPF 5000 sunscreen are just some of the ?Made on Mars? gift products sold in the Martian Embassy store.

?The Martian Embassy for The Sydney Story Factory

?We had a lot of fun creating the first diplomatic mission from inner space?, added Bosse.

The Sydney Story Factory

The Sydney Story Factory is a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in inner Sydney. Volunteer tutors help students to write and publish stories. Free programs target young people, from marginalized, Indigenous and non-English speaking backgrounds, but are open to everyone.

It was inspired by 826 Valencia, a creative writing centre for young people started by novelist Dave Eggers in San Francisco in 2002. A Pirate Supply Store fronts the centre, selling everything the working buccaneer needs: peg legs, eye patches, parrot feed. There are now eight chapters across the US, each with its own unique themed shop. In 2010 novelist Nick Hornby opened The Ministry of Stories in London, behind Hoxton Street Monster Supplies.

Genocide survivor to carry Rwanda flag

As a terrified small boy, Adrien Niyonshuti was forced to hide in small holes in the ground as he fled the horrors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide which left an estimated 800,000 people dead.

Eighteen years later, Niyonshuti is hoping to portray his war-torn African homeland in a more positive light through his exploits at the Olympics, where he is participating in the mountain bike cross-country event.

The 25-year-old is one of only seven Rwandan athletes set to compete at the Games and, as the only cyclist from his country, has been given the honour of carrying the Rwandan flag at the opening ceremony.

He will be one of five cyclists -- one of which is British track king Sir Chris Hoy -- to carry out the honour.

And while Niyonshuti's ambition is to simply finish "in the top 20" of his event, he hopes the performances of Rwandan athletes will have another impact.

"Above all, I would like - as a result of these Olympic Games - that people think of my country in terms of sport and cycling in particular, even as simply a great nation," said Niyonshuti.

"The first thing people think of at the moment is the genocide, but that was 18 years ago. I want people to concentrate on the positive aspects of my country."

For Niyonshuti, Rwanda's tragic history remains seared onto his consciousness.

His six brothers and several friends died while he faced a daily struggle for survival from the mass slaughter.

Nearly two decades on, Niyonshiti is preparing for one of the biggest honours of his career, but added: "I'm very happy to be bearing the flag, but I don't feel any more special than the other athletes selected for the Games."

Although is dream is to take part in the Tour de France, Niyonshuti, for now will have to settle for having the "whole continent" watching his every move.

"Each time that Adrien is riding, Africa rides with him," said Rwanda Cycling Federation president Aimable Bayingana.

"The whole continent will be on his side."

He added: "Adrien is like a son, for all of us: he honours those who love cycling and develop the sport here, and he embodies the values of the whole country.

"Children identify with him, and many would like to take up cycling, but unfortunately we don't have the means to do this to the extent that we would like.

"Adrien will achieve things at these Olympics that most other people cannot dream of."

Chevron 2Q net income slips 7 percent

NEW YORK (AP) ? A soaring profit at Chevron's refineries eased some of the pain of a weaker second quarter.

The oil giant said Friday net income fell nearly 7 percent to $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share. But the results beat expectations thanks to a strong performance from its refinery business.

The company's stock price rose $1.18, or just over 1 percent, to $109.04 in afternoon trading.

Like its peers, the oil giant is struggling to find and replace its sources of petroleum. The world's slowing economy has also pushed down prices for the crude it sells.

But the lower prices had benefits. Profits at Chevron's refining and marketing business rose 80 percent. Its refineries paid less for oil while selling gasoline at higher prices on the U.S. West Coast. Pump prices there remained well above the national average last quarter because of supply problems in the region. The business also sold about $200 million in assets, including its stake in a South Korean energy business.

"They've done a good job of cutting dead weight from their portfolio," Morningstar Inc. analyst Allen Good said. "Their refining business, especially in California, was especially strong."

But the help that lower oil prices gave Chevron's refineries hurt its other business ? finding and selling crude and natural gas.

Earnings from its exploration and production business fell 18 percent to $5.62 billion. Chevron, the second-largest U.S. petroleum company behind Exxon Mobil, sold oil for lower prices in the U.S. and overseas. Natural gas fetched only half as much in the U.S. as it did a year earlier. Production from its global network of oil and natural gas wells declined 2.6 percent.

Profits also fell in the second quarter for Royal Dutch Shell, Occidental Petroleum Corp. and ConocoPhillips. Exxon Mobil profits rose, but that was due to a big one-time gain from the sale of Japanese assets. BP reports its second-quarter financial results next week.

Chinese Real Estate Buyers, Feng Shui & Lucky Numbers

Chinese investors have spent over $10 billion on residential real estate in the United States in the past two years, and invested $1.71 billion in commercial real estate in 2011 alone. This large influx of Chinese buyers makes it important for real estate professionals to understand their wants and needs.

First, let?s look at why U.S. investments are so appealing to Chinese investors. If one word comes to mind, it?s value.

Real estate is very expensive in China, and high prices are the driving force behind investments in the United States. ?For the price of a 500-square-foot one-bedroom apartment in Hong Kong, around $2 to $3 million US, one can buy a 5,000 square foot house on a half-acre lot in most parts of the U.S.,? said Robert Hsu, editor of InvestorPlace?s China Strategy column, in a recent article.

In the article, titled Chinese Investments in U.S. Real Estate, Mr. Hsu shows Chinese buyers are purchasing everything from stereotypical homes in suburban areas to lavish estates. ?My friends in China often ask me about a $34.5 million Beverly Hills mansion that was recently sold to a mainland Chinese couple. In New York City, a $50 million apartment in the new One57 condominium tower was also sold to mainland Chinese buyers,? he stated.

Whether purchasing a small house in Phoenix, Arizona or a full-floor condo in New York City, many Chinese buyers make decisions with numbers in mind. To accommodate them, developers are actually planning projects based on ancient Chinese philosophies.

During the planning of One57, developers decided to put the largest, most luxurious units on the 80th through 88th floors. Since the number eight is believed to be a lucky number associated with prosperity and wealth, it should be no surprise to hear that many of the units were purchased by Chinese buyers.

Aside from lucky numbers, feng shui is also very important.

Originating in China thousands of years ago, feng shui is a system of geomancy that uses the laws of Heaven and Earth to receive positive qi (or chi). Following feng shui principles and building positive energy is believed to improve one?s quality of life.

When it comes to real estate, feng shui applies to everything from putting toilet seats down to furniture positioning to color schemes. Surprisingly, implementing feng shui concepts can actually boost home value and decrease time-on-market, while on the flip side, ignoring feng shui can adversely affect sales. This is especially true in areas with a large number of Chinese buyers, such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami.

A study released in 2007 by the Chinese Science Research Institute found that 21 percent of the Chinese public say they believe in feng shui. This means over one-fifth of Chinese buyers in the United States will likely make decisions with feng shui in mind, which adds up to billions of dollars in investments.

In the end, marketing is all about understanding target markets, and real estate professionals in the U.S. are beginning to get a feel for Chinese buyers. However, there?s still a long road ahead.

What do teachers want in the classroom? A new survery reveals they want more technology, primarily so they can engage the students more and help them retain what they learn. The biggest hurdle to purchasing all the new tech - no surprise - is budget.

PBS LearningMedia has designed an infographic revealing ?WHAT TEACHERS WANT? when it comes to classroom tech (pictured above.) All pretty obvious so far.

We gave it a spin and especially liked some of the videos with popular authors, such as Jerry Spinelli (creator of the wonderful Maniac Magee character) who explains to his youthful audience that sports and books are not mutually exclusive. He encourages kids to emulate Maniac Magee and read books as much as possible.

There's also a "PBS TeacherLine" which helps educators build a repertoire of teaching strategies and knowledge of "research-based instructional concepts" for the new school year.

The school year just got a lot more interesting.

Although there's no time set for when the service might return, Google says that it's "continuing to investigate this issue," aiming to give a status update later today, at 1:50PM ET. The service has been reportedly down for two hours.

Update: And it appears to be back, according to both Google and our own accounts. Some users appeared to get an early return to full service, while others had to wait for the mobile apps to recover. Apologizing for the outage, Google stated that, "system reliability is a top priority," and that the company is "making continuous improvements to make our systems better."

Katherine Jackson 'devasted' kids taken away

Matt Sayles / AP

Prince Jackson, Blanket Jackson and Paris Jackson after the hand and footprint ceremony honoring their late father, Michael Jackson, in Los Angeles on January 26, 2012.

By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

Updated at 5:50 p.m. PT: LOS ANGELES --?Michael Jackson's three children were given a new guardian on Wednesday in an escalating power struggle within the famous musical family involving the singer's multimillion-dollar estate and the well-being of his elderly mother.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff gave temporary guardianship of the children to their cousin Tito Jackson Jr., 34, at his request, after a chaotic week of conflicting reports over the health and whereabouts of family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

Hours after Wednesday's court hearing, Katherine Jackson gave her first TV interview since the often wild and conflicting reports surfaced, denying she had been kidnapped by her adult children and saying she was devastated that Prince Michael, 15, Paris, 14 and Blanket, 10, "have been taken away from me."

Katherine Jackson, 82, who was appointed guardian of the kids in her son Michael's will, was reported missing and unreachable by granddaughter Paris last week.

She was later said by family members to be resting under doctor's order at the Arizona home of one of her daughters.

"There are rumors going around about me that I have been kidnapped," she told ABC News in the interview.

"I am here today to let everybody to know that I am good and fine ... My children would never do anything to me like that," she added.

Katherine Jackson said the court ruling that gave temporary guardianship to her grandson Tito was "based on a bunch of lies."

"I am devastated that while I've been away, my grandchildren have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home," she added.?

The family dispute broke into the open earlier this week in an angry confrontation, seen on security video, between Paris and her aunt, singer Janet Jackson, at the clan's large compound near Los Angeles.

Janet Jackson and four of her siblings are embroiled in a dispute over the validity of the will left by their brother Michael after his sudden death in 2009. The will placed his estate in the hands of two non-family executors.

At Wednesday's court hearing, attorneys for both Tito Jackson Jr. and Katherine Jackson raised questions over whether her absence from her Los Angeles home was voluntary.

Tito Jackson Jr., the son of Michael Jackson's older brother Tito, told Beckloff that he spoke on Tuesday to Katherine Jackson but that she was talking strangely and seemed to be speaking in code.

"I never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said. "I'd ask simple questions and she wasn't sharp."

Another brother, Randy Jackson, said on Twitter Wednesday that suggestions his mother was being held against her will were "absurd."

"Enough already!! We've already lost one family member," Randy Jackson tweeted, claiming the executors of his brother's estate were using the media to "spin their lies and divide our family."

Michael Jackson's will stipulated that money earned by the estate would benefit his mother and his kids. But Randy, Janet and three other siblings say the pop star's signature was forged and that he was not in California on the date it was signed.

The executors of the estate insist the will is valid and said earlier this week they were concerned about protecting the kids from "undue influences, bullying and greed."

Since Jackson's death, the executors have approved numerous projects including a posthumous concert rehearsal film "This Is It", a Cirque du Soleil show, and releases of new and old Jackson music and videos.

Music publication Billboard estimated in 2010 that the "Thriller" singer's estate generated about $1 billion in revenue in just the first year following his death from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol.

According to financial documents filed recently with a Los Angeles probate judge, the estate has earned $475 million in gross profits since Jackson's death, and much of the singer's estimated $500 million debt has been paid off.

Goulburn Greyhounds All Set For First TAB Greyhound Racing Date ...

Written By Tony Richens, New South Wales Greyhound Racing Correspondent 15 hours ago ?

Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club is less than a week away from staging its first TAB meeting and unveiling new state-of-the-art facilities that will make it one of the premier regional greyhound tracks in Australia.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Geoff Kettle and Greyhound Racing NSW Chairman Eve McGregor will both be on hand at the Goulburn track on Tuesday 31 July to officially open the new facilities, which include a world-class kennel block and a new judge?s tower.

The upgrade, which cost more than $900,000, was achieved due to an unprecedented three-way partnership between the NSW Government, Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Greyhound Racing NSW.The unveiling of the new facilities coincides with Goulburn being granted TAB status, meaning each race meeting will be
beamed live into living rooms across Australia and the rest of the world on Sky Racing. Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward said she was pleased to see Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club become a
beneficiary of the NSW Government?s Country Racing Fund.

?I congratulate Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club on receiving this important funding and on behalf of the NSW Government thank Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Greyhound Racing NSW for their commitment to this project.?

Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club Secretary Patrick Day said the new facilities would provide one of the best race day experiences in regional Australia.

?These world-class facilities and the long-awaited introduction of TAB racing will make Goulburn a great destination to race greyhounds,? Mr Day said.

?I would like to thank Goulburn Mulwaree Council, the NSW Government and Greyhound Racing NSW for supporting the upgrade and making it a reality.?

Greyhound Racing NSW Chief Executive Brent Hogan encouraged participants of the sport to take advantage of the new facilities on offer.

?Goulburn is now a quality facility in a key regional area of NSW and I hope participants take advantage of it by nominating their greyhounds and experiencing the improvements first hand,? Mr Hogan said. ?We are now providing a TAB C racing option to owners and trainers from Sydney to Canberra and beyond as we further expand our TAB Network, which I?m sure will be appreciated by participants.?

Goulburn Mulwaree Council General Manager Chris Berry said the opening of the new facility was great for the city of Goulburn, as well as being the first stage of works that will transform the Recreation Area site.

?The Council was very happy to co-fund the new kennel block to allow for TAB Greyhound Racing to come to Goulburn,? Mr. Berry said. ?We are delighted that this will now provide extra exposure for the Goulburn brand around Australia and the world through the televising of 40 greyhound race meetings per year.?

?We are also really looking forward to the construction of the new Multi-Use Facility, in which Greyhound Racing NSW has agreed to be a funding partner, which will provide outstanding amenities and comfort for racegoers as well as a multi-function area for wider Community use.?

The Multi-Use Facility will feature a dedicated indoor viewing area overlooking the greyhound and harness tracks. The construction of the new building is scheduled to commence late in 2012 at a cost of $5.7 million, with Greyhound Racing NSW contributing $300,000.

'Downton Abbey' stars hint at what's to come

By Susan C. Young, TODAY.com contributor

Carnival / PBS

The stars of "Downton Abbey" deliver hints of what's to come in season three of the Masterpiece hit.

Well shut your mouth and pass the crumpets: PBS revealed a spoiler-packed trailer for season three of ?Downton Abbey? at the Television Critics Association summer tour on Saturday.?

The session wrapped with a cheeky Hugh Bonneville, the man behind patriarch Robert Crawley, doing a mock strip tease that revealed a T-shirt proclaiming ?Free Bates!?

Oh, we?re all in for a wicked good time when the Emmy-nominated series returns in early January.

(Spoiler alert! If you don?t want any hints about the season three, stop here.)

The upcoming season is set in the roaring ?20s, and the frocks rock. But there are plenty of rough times ahead for the Crawleys and crew.

Bates may have escaped a death sentence last season, but he and Anna will be fighting for his freedom after he was unjustly found guilty of murder. Brendan Coyle, who plays the beleaguered valet, told TODAY.com he should have cashed in on the merchandizing of the Free Bates shirts, since much of this coming seasons' storyline will be about getting him out.

And there?s trouble to come once again in the rocky romance between Matthew and Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary.

?Did you really think it would go smoothly for them?? a smiling and laughing Dockery said to TODAY.com.

No, indeed.? But will there be a wedding between them?

?Oh, you?ll have to wait and see on that,? she teased. ?But there will be a wedding.?

Love does not run smoothly on ?Downton Abbey.? While a wedding is promised, perhaps it will be glum sister Edith and her older suitor who tie the knot.

But the big ripple on the way is that Downton is once again in dire financial straits after Robert?s bad investments. As the exclusive TCA sneak peek revealed, an undaunted Cora taps into her Yankee roots and says, ?I?m an American. Have gun, will travel.?

But does that mean that the servants are to be dismissed and Lady Mary left to mop the floors?

Not bloody likely.

?There seems to be no end to Cora?s family money,? Elizabeth McGovern told TODAY.com at the post panel soiree. ?They are noveau riche, and still very riche.?

Cora?s fortune bought her family?s way into royalty, and that might be lost. But her parents are still minting money back in the good ol? USA, and they aren?t about to lose their purchased stature.

Cora?s mom, played by Shirley MacLaine, has arrived on the British shores, ready to take on Violet (Maggie Smith). MacLaine is only in two episodes, although the door is open for her to return for subsequent seasons.

Also, it seems the rumor about Smith?s departure from the series after the next season has been greatly exaggerated.

?Oh, that?s just Maggie,? said producer Julian Fellowes of the star not yet signed on past the third season. ?I?m sure she?ll be back.?

If not, MacLaine could be tapped for the resident saucy elder -- if only the producers can figure out a way to get her beloved 12-year-old rat terrier, Terry, through the usual transatlantic quarantine quicker.

?I can?t be away from Terry that long,? MacLaine told TODAY.com. ?He?s old and I don?t like leaving him for that long. But if we could work that out, I don?t mind doing more.?

Fans still have a long wait ahead of them before they learn what else "Downton Abbey" has in store. The Masterpiece series is set to return to PBS in January of 2013.

What plot points and twists are you most looking forward in the third season of "Downton Abbey"? Tell us on our Facebook page.
